The purpose of this newsletter is to update you on events that are
happening in the district, provide information to address issues or
rumors and provide you a forum to communicate with me on items of
interest. If you are receiving this e-mail you are either an East Valley
Staff member, you have signed up for this service, you have sent me an
e-mail or have had some form of contact that we think would cause you to
want this information. If you do not wish to receive this information
you may unsubscribe by clicking the link below or contacting the
district office.

The year continues to fly and our students continue to represent
themselves and our community in grand fashion. Our sports teams are
fully engaged in the winter sports season. We will be looking forward
to post season competitions very soon. Information on events can be
found on the district website. We also continue to have concerts and
contests that showcase our wonderful students. I was recently
privileged to judge the Poetry Out Loud contest at EastValleyHigh
School. This was a great event and I want to thank the teachers, staff,
parents and students who worked so hard to put this together. I hope the
program continues next year.

January was school board appreciation month. The East Valley School
Board is a dedicated group of folks who give a tremendous amount of
themselves to make our school better. In many waysSchoolBoards
represent one of the most basic forms of our democracy. The members are
elected to make local decisions, they make those decisions in the
community they were elected to serve and they are accessible to all of
the citizens to whom they report. I don’t think very many people
realize how much time and effort they give to the duties they have
undertaken.

The last board meeting was a special meeting because the district was
able to recognize over 60 outstanding students. These were students who
had scored in the top 5% in the state of Washington, on the Washington
Assessment of Student Learning. It was great to see these students and
their extremely supportive families at the board meeting.

As of this writing, on Friday afternoon, about 4200 ballots have been
returned for the bond and levy elections. The levy does not need to
validate but the bond needs about 4500 ballots to validate. I feel that
we will achieve that number. I would however remind you to vote. If
you need factual information about this issue you can call me or go to
the district website: www.evsd.org ( http://www.evsd.org/ ).

As always, please do not hesitate to call or contact me with ideas,
suggestions or concerns. You can call me at the district office at
924-1830. You may also contact me via e-mail GlenewinkelJ at evsd.org. If
you follow this newsletter you know I also invite you to call me at home
but this weekend I am moving. My wife and I have been working on
getting a new residence ready and we are excited about getting out of
the apartment that has been home for the past six months. We will be
moving to a home on Gates Laneand by the time I send out the next
edition of this newsletter I hope to have my new home phone number in
operation.
