The purpose of this newsletter is to update you on events that are happening in the district, provide information to address issues or rumors and provide you a forum to communicate with me on items of interest. If you are receiving this e-mail you are either an East Valley Staff member, you have signed up for this service, you have sent me an e-mail or have had some form of contact that we think would cause you to want this information. If you do not want to continue to receive this information you may unsubscribe by clicking the link below or contacting the district office.

The primary purpose of this edition of the newsletter is to ask you for some input. On February 24, 2010 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at East Valley Middle School we are going to begin the process of looking at every aspect of how our district operates.

The first meeting will be mostly a review of information and data about student performance. We will have time for community discussion but because we are committed to ending the meeting as close to 8:00 p.m. as possible, we probably will not get to all of the issues that need to be explored. I expect that we will need a series of meetings to fully develop our vision for the future of the school district.

As we move into deeper discussion, no subject will be off limits. Among the items to be discussed are:

1) Academic rigor
2) Discipline policies
3) Grade configuration
4) Vocational programs
5) Music programs
6) Transportation
7) Food service

The goal will be to discuss the issues listed above as well as any other issues that might come out through our work. Once we decide what we want our schools to look like and what we believe our culture should be then we will begin a conversation about what kind of facilities we need to support our desired learning outcomes.

Our goal will be to have this work completed by late November 2010. If our work shows a need for an adjustment to our facilities, we will translate that work into a bond proposal for February 2011. In the meantime, we will be working to make the changes that do not require new facilities to implement.

Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. The more positive input the better; however, we are asking a core group to commit to the duration. These folks will eventually make recommendations to the Board for action. If you cannot attend, you can write or call me. We will be posting the minutes of the meeting at the district website.

Thank you for your attention and help. Our goal is simple: We want the best for our students.

As always, you may contact me at the district office at 924-1830, at home 928-0519, via e-mail at glenewinkelj at evsd.orgor regular mail in care of the district office, 12325 East Grace, Spokane Valley, WA, 99216.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve this district.
